Elevador da Glória

Linking the Baixa Pombalina (Restauradores Square) to the unique Bairro Alto (the stop is right next to the Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara, with a magnificent view over the city), in a journey of 265 meters, the Elevador da Glória was inaugurated in the 24th of October 1885.
Conceived by the Portuguese engineer Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard, it started functioning with water deposits, afterwards it started working with steam and from 1914 on it finally started working by electric energy.
Two elevators carry out the journey, ascending and descending, transporting tourists and residents, being this the busiest elevator in Lisboa.
